Erdem teamed up with Universal Standard for a more inclusive collection going up to a UK size 40

High end designer Erdem, whose pieces are a firm fixture in royal wardrobes, has taken the unprecendented step of launching a clothing range giong up to a size 40.

Turkish-Canadian designer Erdem Moralıoğlu, who launched his eponymous fashion brand in London, has joined forces with US-based Universal Standard, which specialises in plus-size collections, going up to a UK size 44.

Erdem and Universal Standard have released a summer denim capsule collection with sizes ranging from 0 up to a 4XL, or UK size 40, with a more affordable price tag, ranging from £122.99 to £181.99.

Typically, a dress from the brand loved by both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, costs in the region of £1,000 while a top is £300.

It’s extremely rare for high-end designers to cater for plus-size customers with brands such as Burberry only going up to a size 18, while customers struggle to find anything about a size 14 from labels such as Victoria Beckham.

The collection, which launched yesterday, includes jumpsuits, denim skirts and capri pants as well as ruffled shirts and aims to ‘bring the future of fashion to the present.’

Universal Standard was founded by Alexandra Waldman and Polina Veksler in 2015 with the aim of being an inclusive brand.

Since its debut, they brand has collaborated with both high street and design labels, from Rodarte to J. Crew and Adidas.

And a collaboration with Erdem was on its wishlist from the start, even though the two brands have very different aesthetic.

The British brand, founded by Erdem Moralioglu MBE has become known for its take on ultra feminine silhouette and rose to fame thanks to the support of names like the Duchess of Cambridge, 38 and the Duchess of Sussex, 39.

In spite of the challenges posed by covid-19, including bans on international travel, Waldman and Moralioglu attended fittings to make sure the clothes suited both their styles.

The result is a collection that’s both practical, comfortable and stylish.

The floral print on the shorts and dresses is current and fresh, and with the the right amount of ruffles to keep things feminine.

The collection features two different style of jeans: a wide-legged boyfriend cut and a high-waisted skinny jean offering with a double button sailor front.

There is also a fun denim jumpsuit with contrast panelling and top stitching and a white denim skirt.

For tops and dresses, the capsule includes a ruffled floral cotton shirtdress, a short or long sleeved ruffled shirt with floral pattern in two colours with different trims.

‘There’s a beautiful universality in denim and with careful design you can achieve a wonderful permanence,’ Moralıoğlu said.

‘Fashion for everyone means designing consciously beyond the boundaries of shape or trend,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Alexandre Waldman, who is the Chief Creative Officer of Universal Standard as well as its co-founder said: ‘We want the industry to keep witnessing that size equality is the only way forward.

‘Access for all doesn’t end with US. Together with Erdem, we aim to change the way fashion looks for all of US and the way we look at fashion. This is to the benefit of the industry, the consumer, and the idea of fashion equality,’ she added.

Earlier this year, Moralioglu announced he was extending the sizing of his own line to a UK size 22, and launched a summer collection starting from £108.99 in order to be more inclusive.

‘It was such an obvious gap that we weren’t catering to all our customers equally, which wasn’t right. So we’ve been working on it for the last four seasons slowly to figure out how we offer it and do it the right way,’ he told Vogue.

The designer first opened his Mayfair label in 2005 and has been committed to both innovation and traditional skills since.
