Rod Stewart reveals his ‘football days are over’ after suffering ankle injury

Rod Stewart has revealed that his ‘football days are over’ after suffering an injury to his ankle.

The rock singer, 76, has been hurt ever since his 15-year-old son Alistair tackled him during a game.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun after appearing on crutches during wife Penny Lancaster’s Lorraine interview last week he said: ‘My football days are over.

‘I have a bad ankle injury which I suffered from being tackled by my 15-year-old son.

‘I can still kick a ball when needed though.’

Rod has become known for his support for the Glasgow-based football club Celtic FC over the years.

He went under the knife last October just months after a successful knee replacement operation and still occasionally uses crutches.

Rod has previously blamed his knee trouble on playing football games on ‘bone dry’ pitches in Los Angeles.

He said: ‘I’m suffering for it now. When this is all done I should have a nice straight leg and should be able to run.’

Last Thursday Rod crashed Penny’s Lorraine interview as she was discussing her police training and working to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

The model, 50, was discussing training to become a police constable when her rocker beau suddenly appeared behind her on a pair of crutches.

Lorraine, 61, delightedly exclaimed: ‘Hello! He’s behind you’, as Rod briefly appeared on screen while his wife was chatting.

Penny didn’t appear to mind the interruption as she smiled as Rod walked off, before Lorraine quizzed her on why Rod was walking on crutches.

She said: ‘Has he got a sore leg?’

Penny explained: ‘He had knee surgery but the ankle surgery is taking a little bit longer to heal from, but he’ll be back. He’s got a whole new album coming out soon and he’s very supportive of me doing the police, he knows I’ve got a burning desire.’

Penny, who has been married, 76, to Rod since 2007,  went on to discuss her police training to become a constable and being a police officer.

She said: ‘That picture was taken on Channel 4’s Famous and Fighting Crime so there were some very scary moments, but I felt like this is where I’m meant to be.

‘I know it’s crazy because I’m the wife of Rod Stewart, and for me being a police officer, I feel like you make a difference every day. We are upholding the law, our biggest priority is protecting life and property and maintaining the peace.’

On Rod being supportive, she said: ‘Obviously, he will be nervous for me because police do put themselves out there. I think the police get a hard rap sometimes, with every step we take we have to go through a whole step course of decision making.

‘We’re all trained to treat the public as equals and we would like the public to treat the police with the same respect, and we all set ourselves to create a good experience as well as preventing crime.’

Earlier this month, Penny celebrated her 50th birthday in lockdown and lit 50 personalised candles for the occasion. She took to her Instagram to share a snap of her mantelpiece with fans.

She spaced the white and green candles, which had things like ‘Lady P’ and ’50’ written on them, across every inch of the surface dotted between a white bust.

The mother-of-two said that the ‘outpouring of love’ she received on her special day had ‘warmed’ her soul.

She penned: ‘My lockdown 50th was magical. The out pouring of love and birthday wishes warmed me to my soul.

‘You made my birthday complete, just as you make my life complete. My zoom party was full of unforgettable memories, tears and laughter.

‘I made lots of wishes when I blow out all 50 of my hand made personalised candles, giving thanks to all my cherished loved ones’.

Penny also took to her Instagram Stories to give fans a closer look at her personalised candles, which had ‘soul’ and ‘ritz’ adorned on them.

As she panned across the table, with Annie Lennox’s hit Shining Light playing over the clip, there was also a candle with ‘goats’ on it, a nod to her pet pygmies Rupert, Biscuit and Hazel.

Her birthday cake also featured her beloved goats, with three chocolate sculptures perched on top.

Penny’s green cake was made to look like a field with a fence round the bottom and little icing flowers on top, and included the names of her pets around the base.
