Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard’s musical Best Summer Ever to open ReelAbilities Film Festival


Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard executive produced the high school musical Best Summer Ever, which will screen at New York’s Queens Drive-In on April 29.

Directing duo Michael Parks Randa and Lauren Smitelli’s critically-acclaimed film opens the 13th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival running virtually through May 5 – according to THR.

The 43-year-old Oscar nominee and the 50-year-old Golden Globe nominee portray a TV reporter and her cameraman in Best Summer Ever.

‘Tonight marks the night of a new season,’ Maggie’s unnamed character announced in the newly-dropped trailer.

Benjamin Bratt and his 18-year-old daughter Sophia, who has physical disabilities stemming from a brain injury at birth, appear together in the the movie. 

It centers on teenage couple Sage (Shannon DeVido) and Anthony (Rickey Wilson Jr.), who reunite at school after falling in love at a Vermont dance camp.

Best Summer Ever – featuring a cast and crew of people with and without disabilities – was also executive-produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, and Amy Brenneman.

Those not in New York for the festival honoring the creative expression of people with disabilities can stream Best Summer Ever on VOD starting April 27.

ReelAbilities’ line-up will also feature Nicholas Bruckman’s documentary Not Going Quietly, Chandler Evans & Sachi Cunningham’s film Crutch, Sergio Morkin’s film Maricarmen, and Ignacio Márquez’s film The Special.
