Lena Dunham returns to Wales to direct film adaptation of medieval comedy Catherine, Called Birdy

Lena Dunham has returned to Wales to direct an upcoming film adaptation of Catherine, Called Birdy.

The actress and director, 34, lived in the UK in 2019 as she recovered ‘from a broken heart’ and is back again to film scenes for the medieval comedy.

She took to Instagram on Monday to share some behind-the-scenes pictures from shooting, showing the view from behind the camera lens.

Lena, who hails from New York City, quipped she was ‘back in her native home’ as she snapped a selfie on set. 

The actress spent the summer of 2019 living in Wales after moving to the country to film HBO drama Industry. 

She decided to stay on after filming wrapped, revealing on The Jonathan Ross Show that she ‘was recovering from a broken heart’ and it was a ‘healing’ experience for her to be there.

Lena was clearly delighted to be back for her latest project as she uploaded a selfie from her director’s seat with the Welsh flag emoji and tagging the location, writing: ‘Back in my native home of Wales’.

The Girls creator was wrapped up against the chilly spring weather and wore a white face mask to comply with Covid safety precations.

Lena also uploaded a snap of herself posing in a quirky hat paired with a leopard print top and maroon cardigan as she joked about how her hat ‘brings the charachter into focus’.

The actress also showed off her ‘chicken friends’ on set as she shared a snap of their coop.

It was recently revealed that Billie Piper will be starring in Lena’s adaptation of Catherine, Called Birdy.

The singer and actress, 38, will star alongside Fleabag’s Andrew Scott, 44, and Game Of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey, 17, in the movie, reports Variety. 

The publication reports that Bella is set to play Catherine in the coming-of-age story set in 13th century England, which is based on the 1994 novel by Karen Cushman, while Billie will star as her onscreen mother.  

The movie, which will be realised by Working Title and Amazon, was first announced by Lena in 2014 and is still in the ‘early stages of production’. 

It follows Catherine, 14, who ‘bucks against convention’ and refuses the arranged marriages her father, played by Andrew, lines up for her.
