Mother in her 30s dies and two others are in hospital after fire at house in Huddersfield as man, 34, is charged with arson

A mother in her 30s has died and two others are in hospital after a house fire in Huddersfield.

Police have today named the victim as 31-year-old Samantha Mills from the Huddersfield area. 

Ms Mills died in hospital on Friday after being rescued from a property in the Claire Hill area of the town.

Police have since charged a 34-year-old man with arson.  

Neighbours were alerted by calls for help as flames engulfed the end of terrace house on Tuesday (March 23) night.

Neighbours made desperate attempts to rescue the people trapped by the flames and six casualties were evacuated from the building. 

All six were taken to hospital, with at least three said to be in a ‘critical but stable condition’ over the weekend.

Two people remain in hospital as of today, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed. 

The incident happened two hours after police arrested a man on suspicion of an assault at a nearby address in the early hours of Tuesday.

West Yorkshire Police said at the time: ‘At 3.52am on Tuesday police received a report of an assault at an address in Clare Hill, Huddersfield.

‘Officers attended and made enquiries to locate the suspect. A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident a short time later.

‘Officers reattended a different location in Clare Hill following a report of a fire at 6.09am.’

Police say Craig Collier, 34, of Clare Hill, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and perverting the course of justice.

He was remanded into custody in Leeds to appear at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 23. 

The ambulance service said: ‘We received an emergency call for fire and rescue colleagues at 6.06am this morning to reports of a property fire in Clare Hill, Huddersfield.

‘We dispatched six ambulances, our Hazardous Area Response Team, two managers and two clinical supervisors to the scene and six patients were conveyed to hospital.’
