LIFE IS SWEET

Pistachio, raspberry, vanilla — no, I’m not talking about my favourite ice-cream flavours but the prettiest pastel hues adding a dash of sweetness to spring. I find these colours soothing and calming and a touch nostalgic. They remind me of childhood, although I tried not to look too much like my daughter’s My Little Pony!

SUGAR RUSH

Pastel shades work well blended together — they naturally complement each other rather than clash. For Versace’s resort collection, models wore several at once in joyfully optimistic combinations.

If that feels too much, just one pastel will still make an impact, as Emilia Wickstead showed with her sugary, full-skirted dresses for spring/summer. This double-faced wool coat I’m wearing is from Hobbs and, yes, it is as soft as it looks. If you’re not convinced, Tu at Sainsbury’s does a cropped jacket (below) that is an easier price point to experiment with.

ON THE EDGE

If you don’t have quite such a sweet tooth, look for detailing like Ted Baker’s baby blue dress (below), which has a pointed collar to give it some edge. Very pale blues can make your skin tone look washed out, so choose a slightly more striking periwinkle, like the cashmere jumper I’m wearing here from John Lewis. Or for a cotton version try M&S’s puff sleeve (below), which comes in four different sorbet shades.

PERFECT PARTNERS

Offset the look with creamy colours or a flattering pale neutral. If you’re finding it hard to get out of joggers, give relaxed jeans a go. Don’t forget your lingerie. Give your undies drawer an upgrade with three different nudes in Chantelle’s soft stretch high waist briefs (£15 harveynichols.com), which are seamless for maximum comfort.
