Martin Freeman dons a police uniform and PPE as he films scenes for The Responder in Liverpool

Martin Freeman was spotted looking in high spirits as he filmed scenes for new crime comedy-drama The Responder in Liverpool on Thursday.

The actor, 49, flashed a broad smile as he walked about the set in a police uniform, with Martin also seen wearing a plastic face shield. 

The Hobbit star plays urgent response officer Chris in the six-part BBC series about the Liverpool front-line police force.

Martin is also seen sitting in a police car as he filmed scenes alongside co-star Adelayo Adedayo, who plays rookie cop Rachel. 

The upcoming series is written by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, with the story following crisis-stricken, unconventional officer Chris as he works a series night shifts while on the beat.

The character is seen battling to keep things together both professionally and personally as his marriage is on the rocks, while he’s also struggling with his mental health.

With Chris forced to work with new partner Rachel, both officers will have learn that in order to survive the high-pressure and unabating environment of the night shift, they’ll have to work together – with scenes highlighting both comical and challenging aspects of the job. 

The new show is based around the real-life experiences of ex-Merseyside officer and first-time writer Tony, aims to ‘holdup a mirror up to the emotional, heartbreaking extremes of modern day policing.’

Speaking of the BBC commission, he said: ‘If you had told me six years ago that I would be working with the BBC, a company of the calibre of Dancing Ledge, and an actor with the talent of Martin Freeman, I would have thrown you out of my taxi for being drunk.

‘And yet here I am, surrounded and supported by all these great people, and able to launch this story on one of the greatest TV channels in the world. It turns out that dreams can come true after all.’

He added: ‘I’m so incredibly fortunate to be writing for a cast as amazing as the one we’ve assembled for The Responder. From legends at the top of their game, to young talents who are legends in waiting, it’s a writer’s dream come true.’

Meanwhile, Martin of the series: ‘Tony Schumacher’s script for The Responder resonated with me immediately. It felt like nothing that I’d read or seen.

Film and TV star Martin has starred in a number of big name hits over the years includingh The Office, Black Panther, Sherlock and Love Actually.

As well as The Capture star Adelayo, he’ll be supported by a stellar cast in The Responder including Ian Hart and MyAnna Buring.

While Warren Brown, David Bradley, Kerrie Hayes and Rita Tushingham, as well as newcomers Josh Finan and Emily Fairn, make up the cast.
