Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie reveals he just learned what an ‘Easter Egg’ is while addressing Avengers’ salaries

While promoting his new Marvel Studios TV series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie made a rather surprising revelation: he just learned what an ‘Easter Egg’ is.

The 42-year-old actor’s reveal is even more interesting considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exceedingly well-known for its Easter Eggs, references to previous movies and comic book story lines, in their films.

Mackie was joined by his co-star Sebastian Stan in an interview on The Jess Cagle Show, where he was asked about another surprising tidbit about the Avengers’ salaries… or lack thereof.

The first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuted on Friday, where fans got to meet Falcon’s family in New Orleans.

While Falcon and his sister Sarah (Adepuro Oduye) are applying for a loan to keep their family business afloat, fans learned that none of the Avengers make an actual salary for their heroics.

When asked if he was surprised by the fan reaction to the Avengers salaries – which was a trending topic on Twitter over the weekend – Mackie said he wasn’t.

‘Not really. Nothing about the Internet surprises me anymore, the stuff that people find interesting… I just learned what an Easter Egg is, so there’s a whole bunch of things going on that aren’t surprising at all,’ Mackie said.

Cagle’s co-host Julie Cunningham wondered how Mackie could be part of the MCU without knowing what an Easter Egg is, though Mackie had a simple explanation.

‘Yeah, well we don’t go around saying, “Yo, you see that Easter Egg in Scene 12?” That’s not a conversation you have as an actor,’ Mackie said.

Stan clarified, ‘I think what he’s trying to say is we try not to think as much about it as you think we do,’ which brought a laugh from Mackie in the virtual interview.

Stan also joked, ‘I have like this weird thing to say. It’s like a very strange thing, but we are actually not these characters.’

‘I mean, I know that’s just, that’s gotta be so interestingly fascinating to decipher it, but, but we’re not these, these characters,’ he added.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place after Avengers: Endgame, with both the title characters teaming up on an important mission.

The six-episode series also brings back Marvel characters such as Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl).

After the series runs its course, Marvel Studios will debut Loki on June 11, followed by What If?, Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye on Disney Plus.
