Ed Kavalee hints Erin Molan wanted to replace Samantha Armytage as host of Sunrise – but couldn’t join Channel Seven due to breakfast radio gig

Channel Seven veteran Natalie Bar was officially named as the new host of Sunrise last week, following Samantha Amrytage’s shock departure.

But an industry stalwart has suggested that sports presenter Erin Molan also had her eye on the coveted breakfast TV gig.

In an interview with MediaWeek on Monday, comedian Ed Cavalee revealed that when he learned Samantha was stepping down from Sunrise, he felt sorry for Erin as there was no way she could compete for the role of replacement.

Just missed out? Comedian and radio presenter Ed Kavalee (left) has hinted that Erin Molan (right) wanted to replace Samantha Armytage as host of Sunrise – but couldn’t join Channel Seven due to breakfast radio gig

This is because Erin was already co-hosting 2Day FM’s breakfast show, which broadcasts at the same time as Sunrise every day.

Ed, who also hosts 2Day FM’s breakfast slot, told MediaWeek: ‘When Sam Armytage stepped down as host of Sunrise, I said that’s disappointing for you because we have you locked up.’

The Sunrise hosting role eventually went to Natalie Barr, who had worked at the top-rating breakfast show for 18 years.

It was no surprise that Natalie snagged the role, given that she used to regularly fill in for Sam during her tenure, and former co-host Melissa Doyle before that.

Erin began co-hosting 2Day Fm’s breakfast show The Morning Crew in January, joining veteran radio stars  Ed and Hughsey at the helm.

She also currently presents the weekend sport for Channel 9 and hosts The Sunday Footy Show.

The mother-of-one has previously spoken about her desire to work on a breakfast TV show, telling Stellar in February that she’s been overlooked for such roles in the past.

‘There have been openings on Today and I would have absolutely loved to have had a call-up, and it hasn’t happened,’ she said.

‘That’s life. You deal with that a million times over in any industry.’
