Celebrity facialist Melanie Grant reveals the EXACT order you should apply your skincare

A leading celebrity facialist who looks after the likes of Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham when they are in Australia has revealed the exact order you should apply your skincare, and why you should always start with the thinnest texture first.

Melanie Grant, who has clinics in Sydney, Melbourne and LA, said the most important rule to remember with skincare is that you should start with water-based products and move to oil-based items at the end if you want radiant glowing skin.

‘Start with your most watery products, such as toners, serums, mists and essences,’ Melanie posted on Instagram.

‘Heavier products, such as lotions, moisturisers, oils and creams come next, followed by sunscreen as your final step.’

You should also let any water-based products absorb fully into the skin before you apply anything oil-based as ‘oil and water don’t mix’.

The facialist said it’s worth remembering to go with the lowest pH to the highest pH if you’re using active ingredients in your serums.

But, she added, you should never combine too many active products, as this can lead to acne, redness and breakouts.

The best order for the morning is to start with a cleanser and toner, before following this with a mist or essence, treatment serum, eye cream, moisturiser, face oil and finally your sunscreen.

In the evening, skincare is a more lengthy affair.

At this time, Melanie recommends two cleanses (either an oil or cleansing balm followed by an active cleanse), then a physical exfoliant, toner, chemical exfoliant, mist or essence, treatment serum and eye cream.

You should finally apply moisturiser and face oil before going to bed.

Similarly, she said, if you like both chemical and physical exfoliants, it can be a good idea to use them on alternative nights, as both on the same night can be too much for your complexion.

‘Ensure that you take all of your products down over the neck and décolleté, especially your sunscreen,’ Melanie said.

The exceptions to this rule are strong retinols, grainy scrubs and active serums – which might be too strong for the delicate skin on our chests.

Finally, the expert (pictured) said you should always remember with skincare 'less is definitely more', and you don't need to apply everything at once for the best results

Finally, the expert said you should always remember with skincare ‘less is definitely more’.

‘This is just an example of what goes on and when, it’s best to keep your routine simple and avoid layering too many products or combining too many actives,’ Melanie said.

You should find what works for you the best, and then continue to do this day in and night out, as consistency is what works best for your skin.
