Bondi Rescue’s Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins reveals his secret role as a body double in Muriel’s Wedding

He’s arguably one of the biggest stars on Channel 10’s Bondi Rescue.

But before finding fame on the lifesaving series, Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins had a cameo role in ’90s comedy Muriel’s Wedding.

The 52-year-old was a body double for Daniel Lapaine, who played Toni Collette’s husband in the iconic Australian film.

Surprise! Bondi Rescue’s Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins has revealed that he had a secret role on Muriel’s Wedding

‘Lifeguarding wasn’t 12 months a year, it was only a seasonal job, so I had to pick up extra work in between,’ he said in an upcoming episode of Bondi Rescue.

Hoppo explained he was originally cast as an extra, but was later upgraded to body double for Daniel’s character David Van Arkle, who was a South African swimmer.

‘He was playing the part of an Olympic swimmer so I was perfect for the role,’ he continued.

‘I don’t want to boast or anything but he was the best looking person in the movie.’

Muriel’s Wedding was released in 1994 and went on to become one of the most popular Australian films of all time.

It stars Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths, and tells the story of a socially awkward twentysomething named Muriel who moves to Sydney to improve her life.
