Anya Taylor-Joy admits she’ll understand the success of The Queen’s Gambit ‘in about five years’

‘I’ll understand it in about five years!’ Anya Taylor-Joy admits she STILL hasn’t grasped the success of her acclaimed role in The Queen’s Gambit

Anya Taylor-Joy has admitted she probably won’t grasp the success of her critically-acclaimed role in The Queen’s Gambit ‘for about five years.’

Gracing the cover of Vanity Fair’s April issue, the Golden Globe winning actress, 24, said she knew she had to give ‘so much of herself’ to the character of Beth Harmon after reading Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel.

During the interview, Anya was tight-lipped on details surrounding her next Hollywood role, in an untitled film directed by David O. Russell.

Disbelief! Anya Taylor-Joy, 24, has admitted she probably won’t grasp the success of her critically-acclaimed role in The Queen’s Gambit ‘for about five years’

Posing for a glamorous shoot with the publication, Anya reflected on taking on the role of Beth in the miniseries, which depicted a troubled orphan on her quest to become the world’s greatest chess player.

She said: ‘We used to joke on set that we were bringing sexy back to chess.

‘We didn’t really think that that’s what people would actually think. I don’t think you can be an even kind of sane person and be walking around, like, I have reinvigorated the game of chess!;

Last month Anya was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Limited Series or Television Film for her performance in the series, along with the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

Despite it being several months since the programme was released, Anya admitted she’s still in disbelief about its success.

She said: ‘I think. I’ll probably understand this year in about five years. I think that’s when it will probably hit.

‘The second I closed the book, it was this dawning of, I’m going to have to give this character so much of myself in order to tell the story right.’

Anya is currently in the midst of filming O.Russell’s first film since 2015’s Joy, with details about the picture, including its title, being kept strictly under wraps.

The film boasts a star-studded cast including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington and Robert De Niro.

Unsurprisingly Anya was tight-lipped on details around the film, but did admit that even after several years in Hollywood she struggles to hide her excitement at meeting some of the industry’s biggest stars.

She said: ‘The movie has been very secretive to all of us as well. And so suddenly you hear these names and you can’t really… But you hear these titans of cinema and I’m just like, I am a child! I am a baby. This is insane.’

While there are currently no plans to make a second season of The Queen’s Gambit, star Anya previously shared her suggestions on how the story could progress forward.

Speaking to Deadline, she said: ‘It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother now that she’s sober and more cognisant of the demons that pull her down.

‘It’s so surreal and very wonderful that people want a second season, because we never thought about it, there was no discussion about it.

‘That said, never say never in Hollywood!’
