‘Huge explosion’ at secondary school sparks blaze and sends massive pillar of smoke billowing into the sky as pupils and staff are evacuated

Pupils and staff were today evacuated from an Aberdeen school after a major fire broke out amid reports of a ‘huge explosion’.

Fire crews were called to Northfield Academy in the Scottish city at around 1.43pm this afternoon, with video on social media showing smoke billowing into the sky.

Police sirens could be heard in the distance as emergency services seal off the area while concerned locals watched on.

Scottish Fire and Rescue said firefighters are currently tackling an inferno in the roof of the school building. They have five appliances in attendance as they work to extinguish the flames.
