Hugh is believed to be close to signing on for the lead role in the national production, which will commence in Brisbane and Adelaide, followed by Sydney.

He’s set to replace actor Ethan Jones, who had been performing the role during the musical’s run in Perth.

According to The Daily Telegraph, producers for the show will officially announce Hugh in the role next week.

The announcement comes just four months after Hugh was dropped from Hedwig and the Angry Inch after outrage at the fact he’s not transgender.

He lost the job after objections from LGBTQIA+ group Queer Artist Alliance Australia, who argued that the character of Hedwig is transgender but Hugh isn’t.

Earlier this month, Hugh told Sam Armytage’s Something to Talk About podcast that he’d moved his life from the US to Australia for the role.

‘After Hedwig was cancelled, I was feeling a bit out of place, because the rest of my life is in Los Angeles and it’s all stored away,’ he said.

‘I put everything away, said goodbye to my cat. I took out a [new] lease, I furnished a new apartment in Bondi, and suddenly my wage was gone.

‘I signed up [to Hedwig] thinking I was going to have an income, and actually I was feeling very sad and lost. I was wondering why I was in Australia.’
