Idris Elba leads the way in a new trailer for his upcoming Netflix movie Concrete Cowboy.

The film, which is based off the G. Neri novel Ghetto Cowboy, casts Elba as Harp, a father who takes in his 15-year-old son Cole (Caleb McLaughlin) after he’s kicked out of school in Detroit.

‘Harp finds solace in rehabilitating horses for inner city cowboys at the Fletcher Street Stables, a real-life black urban horsemanship community that has provided a safe haven for the neighborhood residents for more than 100 years,’ Netflix said in a synopsis.

It continued: ‘Torn between his growing respect for his father’s community and his reemerging friendship with troubled cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome), Cole begins to reprioritize his life as the stables themselves are threatened by encroaching gentrification.’

The motion picture was unveiled last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Elba told Variety that the timing was perfect to bring the story about Black cowboy culture to the silver screen.

‘It feels really apt to be able to tell a part history that’s been definitely buried,’ Elba said, ‘and in the case of Concrete Cowboy, that history is right now.’

Elba opened up about the historical value in the material that he and director Ricky Staub sought to preserve with the motion picture, referring to the Fletcher Street Stables in the face of potential gentrification.
