Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure talks TV’s ‘swear count’ and jokes she’s happy to take on expletives

Vicky McClure has joked she’s happy to take on the bulk of Line of Duty’s expletive dialogue.

The actress, 37, addressed her character DI Kate Fleming’s contribution to the BBC drama’s ‘swear count’ as she appeared on This Morning on Tuesday – ahead of the sixth series returning to screens on Sunday.

The television star was asked by host Holly Willoughby, 40: ‘When he [show creator Jed Mercurio] writes the season is he thinking about you?’

Vicky replied: ‘Yes, I think he does. They’re always chatting about different Irish sayings they can come up with. I think there’s a bit of a swear count on TV and I’m happy to take up most of it!’

The actress also assured Holly and co-host Phillip Schofield, 58, fans will soon get the answers they want when the drama returns to BBC on Sunday.

Vicky – who has appeared in the gripping police drama since 2012 – explained the ‘first episode is quite revealing in terms of where the characters are’.

Vicky also revealed how the COVID pandemic disrupted filming, revealing that the closure of pubs meant it was difficult to wind down after wrapping tense scenes.

She said: ‘The thing I found difficult was the schedules, the practical things, and the fun was taken out.

‘When you’ve done a 50 page interrogation scene, going for a pint in the pub after is a release. They’re my best mates and I was away from home so it was nice to be with friends.’

‘When we started the shoot in February, we were like “Oh great there’s loads of bars and restaurant”. Then we just got into our stride and were shut down.’

She continued: ‘To come onto the show is a big ole task and Shalom (Brune) has quite a lot of lines and I remember looking at the script going, thank God that’s not me.’

Vicky also hinted fans can expect to be bowled over by Trainspotting star Kelly MacDonald’s debut performance in the upcoming season.

She enthused: ‘Kelly MacDonald, you’re all in for a treat, she’s (Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson) got an incredible story.’

Vicky also touched upon the cast’s hilarious TikTok video, which went viral in October.

In the clip, Vicky and her co-stars Adrian Dunbar and Martin Compston showed off their dance moves while in full costume to My Bestie and Your Bestie by Yungen.

Holly queried: ‘[That] TikTok video, how did you convince them to take part?’

Vicky explained: ‘I was just a bit bored, hanging around. I liked that it was about being best friends. You can tell Martin doesn’t have a clue what’s going on.’

Last week, it was revealed Vicky had made an estimated £700,000 in 2020, thanks to her leading Line of Duty role.

Vicky has had a lucrative few years starring in prime-time TV shows including ITV’s Broadchurch, thriller Hummingbird alongside Jason Statham and The Replacement.

Speaking to iNews in 2017, Vicky said she and her Line Of Duty male co-stars all get paid the same amount.

She said at the time: ‘I know I’m on the same pay as Adrian (Dunbar) and Martin (Compston). It doesn’t matter who gets the most screentime.

‘We all come as a team. It’s not even a discussion. I’d be questioning what kind of production it was if that wasn’t the case.’

Line of Duty will return on Sunday March 21 at 9pm on BBC One.
