Stefani first referenced her new single in a post made to her account on Wednesday, where she wrote that the song would be released the following day.

She also released the cover art for the song, which featured a western-inspired outfit, which led many to believe that the song would have a country sound.

However, critics were pleased to hear that the song had a reggae-tinged feel, which some saw as reminiscent of her output with No Doubt.

Slow Clap is the second single released from Stefani’s upcoming fifth studio album, which currently has no set debut date.

The first single from the forthcoming project, entitled Let Me Reintroduce Myself,  was released in December.

She released You Make It Feel Like Christmas in 2017, which she collaborated on with her husband, Blake Shelton.

Stefani recently told Stereogum that after feeling confident in a song she had recorded just over a year ago, she was ready to enter the recording studio.

The singer noted that she ‘had written one song, and if it’s good you know it’s good. It’s addictive, you want to share it. By just doing that one session — right before the pandemic — I thought I needed to do some more songs.’

The performer also noted that her upcoming project was partially inspired by her early career and that she wanted her longtime fans to be able to recognize her growth as a songwriter.

‘The intention of this whole album was to write music that was nostalgic to the people who actually did follow me all these years, that they could listen to it and it’d be new but it’d be familiar,’ she said.

Stefani concluded that the songwriting process was ultimately fruitful and that everyone she worked with was enthusiastic about the results.

‘Once I told the people I was starting to collaborate with that that was the direction, it was sort of a wildfire. Everyone was so into it. The songs were coming out so easily.’
