Parents put quirky spin on gender reveal to celebrate adoption of 12-year-old

A Canadian couple threw a Harry Potter-themed ‘gender reveal’ to announce the adoption of their 12-year-old daughter, and fans insist it’s the only version of the controversial celebration they approve of.

Charlette and Dan Fontaine have officially adopted their daughter Bianca after fostering her for four years. The parents, who are living in Manitoba, marked the occasion by putting a spin on the typical gender reveal party.

‘I wonder what it is?’ the mom asks in the viral video shared on TikTok, prompting Bianca to come into the room and pop a black balloon that is filled with pink confetti.

Celebration: Charlette and Dan Fontaine from Manitoba, Canada, have officially adopted their 12-yera-old daughter Bianca after fostering her for four years

‘It’s a 12-year-old girl!’ she yells and starts excitedly jumping up and down.

Charlette is standing next to her husband in the clip, and both of them are wearing Harry Potter-inspired T-shirts that pay tribute to their daughter.

The front of Dan’s shirt says, ‘She’s a keeper,’ while Charlette’s reads, “She’s a catch.’

But the most heartwarming shirt of all is Bianca’s, which refers to her as ‘the chosen one.’

The video has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, and thousands of people have taken to the comments to congratulate the family.

‘This is the only gender reveal I want to see. Excellent. So wholesome,’ one person responded, while another wrote: ‘The only gender reveal that I wholeheartedly approve of. So much joy and love!!!’

‘This is the only gender reveal I will support,’ someone else agreed.

And one fan gushed: ‘THIS IS THE BEST! I will only accept these kind of gender reveals from now in! Happy Family Birthday!’

The Fontaines, who are unable to have biological children, were looking into adoption when they learned about fostering to adopt.

‘In our adoption class, someone said that children over the age of two are sometimes called “unadoptable.” This broke my heart,’ Charlette told DailyMail.com.

The couple wasn’t sure they would get to be parents, but as fate would have it, that all changed overnight.

‘My husband Dan and I took a trip to Niagara Falls in September 2017, and on our last day there, we threw a loonie [Canadian one-dollar coin] from behind the fall and made a wish that if there was a child meant for us we would get a call,’ Charlette explained.

Just 24 hours later, they got a call to foster Bianca, who has been with them since she was eight years old.

The mom, who is a huge Harry Potter fan, said the turn of events inspired Bianca’s nickname, saying: ‘We call her our chosen one.’

‘[Bianca] has fallen in love with Harry Potter as well so it was only fitting to do a Harry Potter theme for our special day,’ she added.

The Fontaines did the gender reveal as a joke for their family and friends to announce the adoption, but they ended up going viral.

Charlette hopes her story will inspire other families to adopt older children.

‘Children that are older deserve a loving caring home like any baby does,’ she said. ‘An older child can be a beautiful addition to your family and bring lots of love and happiness.’
