Dakota Johnson’s dad Don reveals he cut her off financially for refusing to go to college

Dakota Johnson is a successful actress who has had critically-acclaimed roles and even starred in a very successful movie franchise.

But her father Don Johnson revealed that she had much more incentive to make it in Hollywood than most kids with two actors for parents.

The 71-year-old actor appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday night as he admitted to cutting off daughter Dakota, now 31, when she refused to go to college.

He candidly said: ‘The funny thing about her is—we have a rule in the family that, you know, if you stay in school, you get to stay on the payroll. So, you go to college, you get to stay on the payroll. 

‘Towards the end of high school, I went to her and I said, “So, do you want to go visit some colleges?” Or something like that. And she was like, “Oh, no. I’m not going to college.”‘

He went on to remind the daughter he shares with ex-wife and fellow actress Melanie Griffith that if she didn’t continue her education she ‘won’t be on the payroll anymore.’

Don said that he asked her how she was going to able to manage to take care of herself and that she responded: ‘Don’t you worry about it.’

He joked that she defiantly put her fists up as he continued to question her decision but it all seemed to work out in her favor shortly after.

The former star of Miami Vice explained: ‘Three weeks later she had nailed down that part in David Fincher‘s The Social Network.’ 

Don met Melanie when she was just 14 and he was 22 after meeting on the set of The Harrad Experiment.

At the age of 18 in January 1976, the pair married but had split up by July of that same year.

The Milk Money star went on to marry actor Steven Baur in 1982, leading to the birth of her first child, Alexander, 33. The pair split five years later.

Don also moved on to actress Patti D’Arbanville from 1981-1985. The pair welcomed a son, who’s also an actor, Jesse Johnson, 36.

And in a turn of events, Melanie reunited with former love Don, and they married once again in 1988.

The following year, the beauty gave birth to the Fifty Shades of Grey actress before separating after six years.

Melanie entered into her fourth marriage with Hollywood star Antonio Banderas in 1996. The same year she welcomed her youngest daughter, Stella, 22, into the world.

The pair split in 2015. Stella credits herself as a Spanish actress.

Don also went on to marry for the third time, falling in love with kindergarten teacher, Kelley Phleger, 50.

The pair married in 1999 and celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary earlier in the year.

Don and Kelley had three children together; daughter Grace, 19, and sons Jasper, 16, and Deacon, 13.

The time between his second divorce from Melanie and long-lasting marriage to Kelley, the Miami Vice star dated Sally Adams, Barbra Streisand and got engaged to Jodi Lyn O’Keefe in 1995-1996 (who played his daughter on Nash Bridges).
