Jurnee Smollett reunites with Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green for high-octane thriller Fuel at Amazon

Jurnee Smollett is reuniting with her Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green for a high-octane action-thriller entitled Fuel for Amazon.

Amazon is in talks for the project, seemingly emerging victorious in a competitive bidding situation, according to Deadline.

The action movie will put a fresh spin on a type of character typically portrayed by male actors, with Smollett playing a getaway driver.

Fuel is described as, ‘an action-packed female empowerment story that will subvert the relationship between cars and masculinity.’

Smollett will portray a getaway driver who is coerced into working for a crime lord, breaking all of the rules she had put in place for herself.

Kat Wood (Arthur & Merlin) will be writing the screenplay, with both Smollett and Green serving as executive producers.

This is the third project that Smollett and Green will work together on, following Lovecraft Country and the WGN America series Underground, which Green created and executive produced.

Wood has set up a number big projects lately, including Envoy and Genus with producer Amy Pascal, Diplomatic Courier with Skydance and Ruby with 87North and Amazon.

Green is attached to write and make her feature directorial debut on a new Tomb Raider movie, with Alicia Vikander returning as Lara Croft.

Green also wrote and will produce The Mother, which Netflix picked up in a competitive bidding situation.

She is also producing Cleopatra Jones for Warner Bros. and The Gilded Ones for Makeready.

Smollett is also coming off playing Dinah Lance, a.k.a. Black Canary, in Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey, one of the last movies to hit theaters before COVID-19.

Smollett will next be seen on the big screen in Escape From Spiderhead, from director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy).

The story is set in the near future, where convicts are offered the chance to shorten their sentences by volunteering for medical experiments.

The story follows one convict who is given a drug that is capable of generating feelings of love, as he starts to question his true emotions.
