Doctor Who’s Jo Martin reveals she would ‘love’ to reprise her role as Fugitive Doctor

‘There’s so much more story’: Doctor Who’s Jo Martin reveals she would ‘love’ to reprise her role as the Fugitive Doctor on the show or a spin-off

Jo Martin has revealed she is eager to reprise her role as the Fugitive Doctor on Doctor Who, whether it be on the main series or her own spin-off.

The actress surprised viewers last year when her character was revealed to be a secret incarnation of the doctor, making her the first black person to play the role.

It is currently unknown where the Fugitive Doctor falls in the show’s chronology and Jo told Radio Times she would love to explore the character more in the future.

She said: ‘Of course, of course. What’s not to like about that? I would absolutely love it. And they’ve got John Bishop there now, haven’t they? I’m a big fan of his. I want a scene with him.

‘I think there’s so much more story. What they set up opens up a world that we’ve not fully explored with Doctor Who yet.

‘And you don’t want to waste that costume. You know what I mean? That costume – it’s a real waste of a costume because it’s so swaggy, as they say. So I think that costume needs to get worn again by me.’

If she can’t return to the main series, Jo jokingly told showrunner Chris Chibnall she is ‘ready’ for her own spin-off.

The actress added that she is quite busy at the moment but if Doctor Who was to call again she would be ‘there in a jiffy’.

It comes after reports that current Doctor Jodie Whittaker was said to have handed in her notice to show bosses after three years of playing the Time Lord.

Following reports by The Mirror about Jodie’s departure, a BBC spokesman said: ‘We won’t be commenting on any speculation around Jodie’s future on the show.’

Jodie reportedly told BBC bosses that she won’t be returning to the popular series following the conclusion of series 13.

That will mark a three-year run for the actress, which is about average for recent actors playing the time-traveling alien.

Matt Smith, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi also appeared on Doctor Who for three series each, while Christopher Eccleston only appeared on one series after the show was revived in 2005.

According to a source for The Mirror, the show is already at work on figuring out how Jodie will be replaced by the Fourteenth Doctor.

‘It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration,’ a source said.

‘Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It’s very exciting.’

As with previous Doctors, at the end of Jodie’s tenure her character will ‘regenerate’ into a new form, at which point the next actor will take over the role.

Doctor Who fans have since called for Jo’s iteration of the character to become the 14th Time Lord.

Michaela Coel and Richard Ayoade have also emerged as the bookies’ favourites to replace the thespian, while Sister Act’s Whoopi Goldberg recently admitted she’s set her sights on stepping into the TARDIS as the next Doctor.
