  • She was given a shower to keep cool in the searing heats of up to 86F (30C)
  • Handlers are currently appealing for the public to help officially name the hippo

A playful pygmy hippo nicknamed Bacon looked to be in her element as she was doused with spurts of water straight from a hosepipe.

The six-week-old was filmed at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, eastern Thailand.

She sat patiently as her handlers gave her a shower to keep cool in the searing heats of up to 86F (30C).

In the clip, filmed on February 26, Bacon can be seen sitting on a bed of vegetation near her six-year-old mother Kanya.

A cool jet of water squirts directly toward her body before she repositions her head to ensure she receives a thorough dousing all over.

Bacon tentatively sniffs at the spurt of water but then shuts her eyes as it rains gently down on her face.

The youngster was born at the sanctuary on January 14 and handlers are now appealing for the public to help officially name her.

So far Moo-Wan, or Bacon, is the favourite for the little hippopotamus.

The hippo’s carer said: ‘This little girl is full of energy. She has lots of personality. Everything is new to her, so she is curious and enjoys it, like when the water was being splashed on her. She’s very playful, too.’

Khao Kheow Open Zoo is now home to ten hippos and eight pygmy hippos – which are one-tenth the size of their larger cousins.

Among them is the oldest hippopotamus in Thailand, Mali, at 55 years of age.
