A carpenter who became a multi-millionaire businessman after moving from Ireland to England more than 30 years ago has come out on top in a family court fight over money with his estranged wife.

Sharon Horohoe believed she had been ‘cheated’ following the breakdown of her marriage to Ciaran Horohoe, and argued he should hand her £5million.

But a judge has ruled that she should get a lump sum of £600,000 instead after considering evidence at a family court hearing in London late last year.

Mr Justice Holman heard how both were in their early 50s and had met when in their early 20s, after each had migrated to England from Ireland.

Mrs Horohoe had then been a trainee nurse and Mr Horohoe a carpenter. Mr Horohoe had created a construction company, Horohoe Construction, in the late 1990s which had grown and flourished, and the couple had lived together in London.

The judge said Mr Horohoe was now worth more than £10million.

He heard that the couple had separated a decade ago and in 2012 had reached a post-separation agreement. Mr Horohoe had relied on the terms of the agreement and offered Mrs Horohoe nothing.

Mrs Horohoe believed that she had been ‘cheated’ and wanted £5million.

The judge said he was ‘not prepared to agree’ with that and concluded that she should get a £600,000 lump sum.

He said Mrs Horohoe was worth more than £1million. She had had her own home and, as a result of the 2012 agreement, owned rented properties in the London area.

Mr Justice Holman said the pair had run up lawyers’ bills in the region of £500,000. He said he deeply regretted the fact that they had been unable to reach a settlement.
