WandaVision director Matt Shakman teases ‘surprising but satisfying finale’

With just two days left until the WandaVision Season 1 finale debuts on Disney Plus, director Matt Shakman is revealing new details.

Shakman, a TV directing veteran of nearly 20 years with episodes of Game of Thrones, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and many more to his credit, directed all nine episodes of WandaVision’s first season.

The filmmaker is opening up about the Friday finale in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he called the conclusion, ‘surprising but satisfying.’

The show has spawned multiple theories about how the first season comes to a close, particularly about a massive cameo, seemingly in the finale.

Elizabeth Olsen teased the cameo in a February interview, stating, ‘There’s this thing that’s been kept completely under wraps that happens, and I work with this actor that I have always wanted to work with… With this guy.’

Fans have been trying to guess who this ‘guy’ is for the past few weeks, though while Shakman didn’t divulge his identity, he hopes fans enjoy the whole season.

‘I hope that they feel like the journey was satisfying for them. I know there are so many theories out there; there will be a lot of people who will no doubt be disappointed by one theory or another,’ Shakman conceded.

‘But we’re always telling this story about Wanda dealing with grief and learning how to accept that loss, and hopefully people will find that the finale is surprising but also satisfying, and that it feels inevitable because it’s the same story they’ve been watching the whole time,’ he added.

One of the most memorable scenes of the whole season came a few weeks ago when it was revealed that Kathryn Hahn’s Agnes was actually a Marvel comics villain named Agatha Harkness, who possess supernatural powers like Wanda.

Part of that reveal was an incredibly catchy song dubbed Agatha All Along, crafted by EGOT winners Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Frozen), who Shakman went to college with.

Shakman said it was ‘such a pleasure’ to film those scenes set to the song, though it did involve more planning than usual.

‘Everything had to be planned along the way — which meant that in the middle of shooting that stylized sitcom moment, we’d be like, “Okay, now for ‘Agatha All Along!'” It’s a completely different language, which was more cinematic, more from her point of view. We had a great deal of fun with it,’ Shakman said.

The last episode revealed that the world Wanda has created – complete with sitcom tropes from various decades – were all a way to cope with her grief and loss.

‘The whole show has really been about Wanda processing grief. That’s been the engine behind everything, from the earliest episodes all the way up until now,’ he said.

As of now, there doesn’t seem to be any immediate plans for a second season of WandaVision, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirming that Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff will move directly to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
