Sam Worthington admits he feels like a ‘novice’ upon his return to theatre

Sam Worthington feels like a ‘novice’ upon his return to theatre after a 22-year break as he talks about coming ‘home’ to Australia with wife Lara

He recently moved back to Australia with his family to star in the Sydney Theatre Company production of Appropriate.

But despite a lengthy film résumé, Sam Worthington has admitted he feels like a ‘novice’ while preparing for his first play in 22 years.

‘I look at the other actors and definitely they have more experience than me,’ the Avatar star, 44, told Sydney Morning Herald.

Worthington stars opposite Mandy McElhinney, Johnny Carr and Lucy Bell in the play.

It’s his first performance in an Australian play since 1999’s The Judas Kiss at the Belvoir St Theatre.

The Clash of the Titans star described the medium as more ‘fluid’ than film, and said that was exactly what he’d ‘been longing for’.

Appropriate opens on March 19 at the Roslyn Packer Theatre.

Sam, who shares three sons with his wife, model Lara Worthington (née Bingle), also spoke about coming ‘home’ after spending 15 years in the United States.

‘Australia is my home, definitely. I was raised here,’ said the English-born actor, who grew up in Western Australia.

However, questions about whether his family’s move to Sydney is a permanent one were ‘firmly off-limits’ during the interview.

Notably, the couple did put their $12.57million Hollywood home on the market in November.

The Worthingtons are parents to sons Rocket, five, and Racer, four, and an 11-month-old who’s name is yet to be announced.

They relocated from Los Angeles to Sydney earlier this year.

According to Who magazine, the couple decided to return to their native Australia for an ‘extended stay’ while Sam performs in Appropriate.

The theatre show begins this month, and Sam won’t have to go far when production resumes on the Avatar sequels because they are being filmed in New Zealand.
