Myleene Klass turned down Hear’Say Reunion as she was left to clean up bands mess when they split

Myleene Klass has revealed she turned down the potential Hear’Say reunion in part because she was left to clean up the band’s mess after their split.

The singer, 42, told how she had to deal with furious music executives after the group went their separate ways in 2002 after winning Popstars the previous year.

Speaking to The Sun, Myleene cited her busy work schedule as well as Kym Marsh’s decision to quit the band as reasons why she didn’t commit to the 20th anniversary reunion.

She said: ‘You’ve got to remember though, for me, I feel like I was the last to leave the band as I was the one to turn the lights out in the office.

‘I had to walk into a massive brand [meeting] and they said, “What are we gonna do now? We’ve got half a million Easter eggs and there’s five of you on them” and I’m 21 years old going, “umm”.

‘They want their money back and I’m like, “I don’t have it. I assure you I don’t have that money for your half a million pound Easter egg deposit.”‘

Myleene also revealed bandmate Suzanne Show paid her a visit last year to try and convince her to be a part of the reunion but Myleene insisted she had too much on.

Speaking on Sink The Pink’s ‘Pop Tarts’ Instagram Live, Myleene admitted she was devastated when Hear’Say split up.

She said: ‘It’s funny, isn’t it, because it’s 20 years ago. So, if I asked you what happened around the photocopier in the office 20 years ago, you can’t really remember.

‘But, of course, it was sad when it ended because we thought we were going to be bigger than U2. Well, I did. I don’t know what everyone else thought.’

Kym previously admitted a rivalry between her and Myleene ‘festered’ in the months leading up to her decision to quit the band.

In her 2011 autobiography, she recalled one incident where the pair came to blows backstage in a US TV studio before a performance.

She said: ‘Me and Myleene had a slagging match but someone split us up as we were due to go on air.

‘Going on to perform our single was horrible. At one point, me and Myleene had to put our arms around one another. It was so fake and I hated every minute of it.’

Kym revealed in November the group had ‘reconnected’ and were discussing reuniting for their 20th anniversary.

She said: ‘It’s been lockdown and everyone’s kind of been trying to reach out to people that maybe they haven’t spoken to in a while.

‘We have reconnected and we’ve had some wonderful Zoom chats reminiscing about old times and I’m not going to lie, we have talked about 20 years next year.

‘We were the first reality TV show of its kind and it would be silly for us not to kind of think about perhaps giving a nod to that, but there’s nothing set in stone, we have no idea but maybe.’

Hear’Say, which also included Noel Sullivan and Danny Foster, formed on ITV show Popstars in 2001 and found success with their number one hit Pure and Simple.

The group were later joined by Johnny Shentall after Kym left the band in early 2002.

Hear’Say’s first album Popstars was a huge hit but their success quickly dwindled by the time they released their second album Everybody.

They split up in October 2002, less than two years after being put together on Popstars and cited ‘abuse from the public’ at the time as the primary reason behind the breakup.
