Luke Hemsworth takes on Chris’ Thor role alongside Matt Damon on Love and Thunder in Sydney

Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder is in its second month of production.

The Hollywood blockbuster’s hard-working crew put the final touches on an impressive set along Sydney’s picturesque coastline over the weekend.

On Thursday, Luke Hemsworth, Matt Damon, and Melissa McCarthy were seen shooting scenes on the elaborate site, nestled on a cliff edge at Little Bay.

Dressed in full Thor regalia, including a wig and fake beard, Chris Hemsworth’s older brother Luke, 40, looked astonishingly like his sibling.

From afar Luke could easily pass as Chris’ double, but in real life he is actually shorter than Chris, and given his brother’s intensive training, not as muscular in his biceps.

Chris, 37, has portrayed Thor in the franchise for 10 years, but his brother was able to take on the role temporarily in 2017’s Ragnarok as he portrayed an Asgardian actor playing the role of Thor in a stage play that the real Loki (Tom Hiddleston) put on.

Luke appears to be reprising his cameo from Ragnarok in Love and Thunder.

Director Taika Waititi told Games Radar of the 2017 version of the play: ‘We filmed it and then we realized it might be funnier if we make it more of an in-joke, where the stars of this play were stars on earth.’

Joining Luke on set this week was Matt and Sam in their original cameo roles.

Matt, 50, was all but unrecognisable in a long, flowing black wig, with tresses past his shoulders.

He wore an elaborate, futuristic outfit, which appeared to consist of a green jacket with gold accents and large, pointed shoulders.

‘Melissa and I are desperate to be in the film Thor: Love and Thunder,’ Ben began, as the pair insisted they’d be great ‘local hires’ as they were based in Byron Bay – Chris Hemsworth’s hometown.

When filming wrapped, she extended her stay with husband Ben and children – daughters Vivian, 13, and Georgette, 10 – to film her upcoming Netflix series ‘God’s Favorite Idiot’ in the country.

The heavily guarded Little Bay set is expansive, with a multitude of tents and crew on hand, and enormous set pieces dwarfing the actors.

Likely for privacy and security reasons, there is a large fence surrounding the area.

In the cordoned-off area are large machinery vehicles, including a mobile crane telehandler to support a camera operator, as well as earth movers and scissor lifts.

Lead actor Chris Hemsworth, who lives in Byron Bay, has been flying in and out of Sydney via private jet since production commenced in January.

His friend and co-star Matt Damon has joined him on several of these journeys, which was an early indicator of the American actor’s return to the franchise.

While some fans thought the Bourne Identity star could be set for another play-style cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder, another theory doing the rounds was that Thor may need someone to impersonate his deceased brother Loki, and calls upon Damon’s character to do so.

Damon arrived in Australia in January and privately funded his two-week quarantine with his family at a $7,000-a-night mansion in Byron Bay.

The latest installment of Thor is being filmed in Australia after receiving a $24.1million location incentive grant from the Federal Government.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the film is expected to bring more than $178million to the local economy, create 2,500 jobs and enlist services from about 1,650 businesses.

According to Screen NSW, it’s part of a deal which will see several Marvel films made in Australia over the coming years.

In the forthcoming Thor installment, Natalie Portman is also back as Jane Foster, and will pick up the hammer and become the Goddess of Thunder (i.e. the female Thor).
