  • The ex-boxing champ was left fuming and said tenant isn’t responding to him
  • Police were called to the three-bed detached house amid broken door report

Former boxing champion Junior Witter was left fuming after a house he rents out was raided by police who discovered a cannabis factory inside.

Police were called to the three-bed detached house in Sheffield on Sunday after a neighbour reported that the back door was smashed in.

However, when they arrived at the scene, they found a cannabis farm set up at the house.

Witter – a former British, Commonwealth, European and WBC super lightweight champ – was left shocked by the news, taking to social media to blast the tenant.

The Bradford-born boxer, 46, bought the property for £154,000 in 2005 and had been renting it out to a man for a ‘couple of months’.

Mr Witter said: ‘B****y hell news does travel fast, doesn’t it? I own the property. I have rented it out. There was a break-in, police have gone and now I’m just left with a lot of mess to clean up.

‘Someone said someone’s looking for a house to rent and that was it. They have not replied or answered since then. ‘I’m not happy with it at all.

‘You’re just trying to make a living like anyone else and then someone comes and does you over.

‘That’s life, isn’t it? But I just have to pick up, restart and move on.’

He added: ‘I’m not happy at the moment, they have done stupid amounts of damage and it’s now left with me to pick up the pieces.

‘The police said more or less there was nothing left, so it looks like there was one [a cannabis farm] but there wasn’t one at that particular time. There has definitely been some messing around.’

Neighbours have suggested a rival dealer might have smashed the back door open and stolen the stash.

Witter added: ‘It is not something I’m interested in, I don’t deal cannabis or have anything to do with it so it’s right annoying.’

A neighbour said: ‘He is a nice enough guy. For the past three years I would just see him every now and again popping in but I haven’t seen him for about nine months to a year.’

‘It was definitely Junior Witter’s house and the police had to come and take lots of cannabis away and the Northern Grid had to come and make his house safe because of all the cannabis equipment.’

They added: ‘Someone came and kicked in the patio doors, that’s why a neighbour noticed it and called the police.’

They said neighbours could sometimes smell people smoking cannabis in the garden but they ‘thought it was for personal use’ so didn’t report it.

A South Yorks Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to reports of a break-in at a property in Herewood Lane, Sheffield at 12.38pm on Sunday.

‘While on scene, officers discovered a cannabis farm within the address.

‘Investigations are now underway into the production of cannabis and the break-in.

‘Anyone with any information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 424 of 21 February.’
