Carrie and Mike welcomed their first son in 2015, but throughout 2017 and 2018 the American Idol star suffered three miscarriages as she tried to conceive again.

In a 2018 interview with CBS News, she admitted that the family tragedies were the inspiration for her 2018 single Cry Pretty, on the album of the same name.

‘Throughout the whole process [of miscarrying], you know, I’m writing and, like, literally right after finding out that I would lose a baby, I’d have a writing session, I’d be like, ‘Let’s go. You know, I can’t just sit around thinking about this. Like, I wanna work, I wanna do this,’ she recalled.

She went on to describe the songwriting experience as ‘therapeutic.’
