Marvel’s Kevin Feige offers updates on Deadpool 3 and says no plans for WandaVision Season 2

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared updates on several Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects during the Television Critics Association’s winter tour.

Feige, 47, offered an update on Deadpool 3, insisting that it will be an R-rated film, despite Marvel’s parent company Disney rarely releasing R-rated fare (via Deadline).

He also confirmed that the studio currently has no plans for a second season of the hit Disney Plus series Wanda Vision, with Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff character moving directly to Doctor Strange 2, though he didn’t completely rule out another season in the future.

The Marvel Studios president was asked at the TCA panel if there have ever been internal discussions about more ‘adult-oriented’ shows for Marvel, as the franchise continues to expand.

‘I think we target everything we’re doing for kids and adults, so I think your question is more adult or R-rated,’ Feige began.

‘Other than Deadpool, which has already established itself as a certain genre and a certain rating, that we already said we would not mess with when we started working on Deadpool – which we have – other than that, we haven’t encountered a story or a storyline or a character’s journey that a PG-13, or the tone, or the ratings we’ve been using up to this point has prevented us,’ he added.

R-rated: 'I think we target everything we’re doing for kids and adults, so I think your question is more adult or R-rated,' Feige began.

He added the studio hasn’t been ‘held back’ by conforming to the PG-13 rating, but he added, ‘We’ve told all the stories that we wanted to with the tonality and the rating we have now.’

It was announced in November that sister scribes Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have come aboard to write Deadpool 3, with Ryan Reynolds returning as the title character, though little else is known thus far.

The Deadpool franchise originated at 20th Century Fox, where it set box office records for R-rated movies and grossed $1.56 billion worldwide between just two movies.

Many fans were worried that the foul-mouthed anti-hero may fall by the wayside when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, given Disney’s reluctance to release R-rated projects.

While it’s unclear when the sequel may move forward, Feige made it clear that fans should expect no major changes with the R-rated Merc With the Mouth.

Feige also spoke about some of the new Marvel shows that will be debuting on Disney Plus in the coming months, many of which they are planning for multiple seasons, though some they are not, at the moment.

Marvel’s first series on Disney Plus is the current hit WandaVision, which wraps up its nine-episode run on March 5.

The show has been a hit with fans and critics alike, though Marvel and Disney have yet to renew it, though Feige said there are no current plans for Season 2.

‘Some of the shows that I mentioned that we were about to start filming, we are keeping in mind a structure that would lead into a Season 2, a Season 3, in a more direct way than, say, a show like, like WandaVision, which clearly goes into into a feature,’ he said.

Feige added that WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen, ‘will go from WandaVision to the Doctor Strange film,’ referencing the sequel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which is currently filming and slated for release on March 25, 2022.

He added, ‘I’ve been at Marvel too long to say a definite ‘No’ to anything as far as a second season of WandaVision,’ hinting a second season could come further down the line.

After WandaVision, Marvel will release The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on March 19, with Feige announcing Wednesday that Loki will debut on June 11.
