Comedian Andy Lee reveals the bizarre the gift his longtime friend Hamish Blake sent him to celebrate a special milestone

He is set to host Channel 10’s brand new game show, The Cube.

And ahead of Wednesday’s premiere, comedian Andy Lee revealed that his longtime friend and work colleague Hamish Blake sent him a watermelon as a present to celebrate his first day of filming.

The 39-year-old said the unconventional gift related to a memory the pair shared in China while filming Hamish and Andy’s Asia Gap Year back in 2013.

How thoughtful! Andy Lee has revealed the bizarre story behind the gift his longtime friend and work colleague Hamish Blake sent him on his first day of filming The Cube

He explained that after a long day of shooting the show they enjoyed the refreshing fruit while having foot massages at a local massage parlour.

While the pair were relaxing, the Chinese version of The Cube came on the television in front of them.

‘They (the foot massage place) had a big TV in front of the foot massage area and we sat there watching the Chinese version of the show (The Cube),’ he told News.com.au.

‘They kept bringing us watermelon as we watched, and even though we didn’t realise what they were saying, you could tell what was going on with the games.’

Andy said they were so invested with the contestants and the games, that after they left the massage parlour they were so full of watermelon they felt ill.

The outing was clearly a lasting memory for Hamish, who sent a box of beers and a giant watermelon to Andy’s dressing room on the first day of filming The Cube in Sydney.

The TV host recalled: ‘The note said, “This is nothing compared to how much we ate, but at least you can nibble on it throughout the series.”‘

Hamish and Andy did four Gap Year seasons where they travelled across the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The comedy duo also hosted the successful daily drive-time radio show The Hamish & Andy Show on the Hit Network from 2006 to 2010, before cutting back to a weekly show.

The Cube begins on Wednesday at 7.30pm on on Channel 10
