Jet2 pilots are asked to avoid booking time off this summer in a sign travel firms expect Britons to be able to take foreign breaks after lockdown

  • Jet2 cancelled holidays until April after Government introduced new restrictions
  •  Request to 1,000 UK pilots signals vaccine rollout could save summer holidays
  • The scheme is entirely voluntary but has had a strong take-up by employees

Holiday giant Jet2 has asked its pilots to avoid booking time off this summer in a sign that travel firms expect Britons to be able to take foreign breaks in sunshine spots such as Greece after lockdown ends.

Jet2, which operates flights and package holidays to more than 30 European destinations, has cancelled all holidays until mid-April after the Government imposed tougher border restrictions and quarantine rules.

But the request to about 1,000 UK-based pilots signals the vaccine rollout could yet save the summer holiday season.

The company stressed the scheme is entirely voluntary, but has had a strong take-up by employees.

In a statement Jet2 said: ‘We remain very positive about taking customers away on their long-awaited holidays in the coming months, and we continue to be as flexible as possible.’

Chief executive Steve Heapy also backed an industry appeal this weekend, urging Boris Johnson to set out a clear roadmap for restarting overseas travel in his lockdown exit announcement tomorrow.
