Mortal Kombat motion picture has new official preview featuring classic characters

Warner Bros. debuted a new Mortal Kombat trailer on Thursday, depicting a number of classic characters and sequences from the video game series it’s spawned from.

Among the characters seen in the preview include Lui Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung and Goro, with some of their signature fatalities showcased in the trailer.

Director Simon McQuoid last month told Entertainment Weekly that the film wouldn’t be short on bloodshed in it’s depiction of battle and ‘pretty nasty hand-to-hand combat.’

‘Blood represents a connection,’ he said. ‘Blood represents who we are. Without getting too overcomplicated, what we did is use blood executionally.’

He said that the motion picture is ‘not a shiny film,’ noting that he ‘wanted the dirt and the grime to come through.’

According to a studio synopsis, the storyline follows a new character named MMA fighter Cole Young as he ‘seeks out Earth’s greatest champions in order to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.’

Lewis Tan, who played the role of Young, explained the circumstances behind his character.

‘When we first meet Cole, he’s in a really bad spot,’ Tan told EW. ‘He’s down on his luck. He’s kind of a washed-up MMA fighter who used to be a champion, who used to believe in himself, who used to have a lot of hope in his career. And it’s all gone down the drain.

‘It’s a very interesting place for a hero to start, and I think that, along the journey of Mortal Kombat and Cole discovering where he comes from, you’re introduced to all these other iconic characters and elements that everybody loves so dearly.’
