Dramatic pictures capture the moment a zebra reared helplessly in a desperate attempt to escape from being eaten alive by a pride of eight lions at a national park in Zambia.

The 880-pound zebra wriggled and kicked desperately as the pack of hungry beasts sank their teeth into the prey’s body and feasted on it while it still lived.

One of them proceeded to bite down on the zebra’s neck, forcing the poor creature to lie there, as the blood-soaked lions devoured it all within 30 minutes.

The scene, which was not unusual for predators like lions, was captured at the South Luangwa National Park by photographer Peter Geraerdts who watched the zebra’s ordeal from just 50 feet away.
