Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert’s training session was interrupted in dramatic circumstances on Monday due to a fire caused by the club’s own supporters.

Sources claim a group of disgruntled fans upset at the direction the club are headed under Lambert threw flares into the club’s training HQ which caught on mesh netting causing the fire to spread.

Sources claim Ipswich players were in the midst of inter squad training match as the smoke began to bellow over the training field.

Play was immediately brought to a halt for the safety of all the Ipswich players and staff involved in the session.

Local police have been alerted and Ipswich are co-operating fully with their enquiries.

Supporters were said to be making clear their feelings towards Lambert as they set about disrupting the Scot’s final training session before Tuesday’s clash against Northampton.

Ipswich are 12th in League One and Monday’s protests are indicative of supporters’ fury.

In a statement released to Sportsmail, a club spokesman said: ‘There was an incident at the training ground this morning where flares were thrown over a perimeter fence adjacent to the players.

The flares caused signage on the fence to catch alight and in doing so put our staff at risk. The police were called and are investigating the matter. The supporters’ group concerned have apologised for their actions. ‘
