Emeli Sandé ‘leaves record label EMI’

Emeli Sandé has parted ways with her record label EMI after nearly ten-years due to the ‘pressure’ of releasing new music and living up to her previous chart-topping success, it was reported on Monday.

After reaching the No.1 spot with her best-selling album, Our Version Of Events, the Next To Me songstress, 33, has reportedly ‘struggled’ to obtain the same sales figures.

Now she hopes to work on a new album independently, following her hiatus in December to focus on new music.

Split: Emeli Sandé has reportedly parted ways with her record label EMI due to the ‘pressure’ of releasing new music and living up to the success of her first album, Our Version Of Events

An insider told The Sun: ‘Emeli and her label have decided to go their separate ways after ten-years together.

‘She had a great time and with their support she became a massive success story thanks to Our Version of Events.

‘But her two follow-up albums haven’t had the same sales figures and it has been difficult for her.’

MailOnline have contacted EMI and Emeli’s reps for comment.

Her debut album was released in 2012 and reached number one in the UK, overtaking Adele’s, 21.

It also became the second best-selling album of 2013 and spent 67-consecutive-weeks in the top ten.

The news comes after Emeli, born Adele Emeli Sandé, announced in December that she was pausing her online activity to focus on music.

She said: ‘I’m taking a break offline now to focus fully on finishing the next album and to prepare for when I can perform live for you again.

‘I’ll see you on the other side with a whole new chapter of life, love and music to share!’

During an interview in 2019, Emeli revealed her private struggle with depression and anxiety left her questioning her place in the music industry.

The singer described how she lost her personality, confidence, and even doubted whether or not to continue her career during a particularly dark period.

The musician, who at the time was dealing with her divorce from childhood sweetheart Adam Gouraguine, said: ‘I doubted whether I wanted to continue being a musician.’

She added: ‘I questioned whether people wanted to hear me, because people were saying I was on TV too much.

‘People said I was overexposed, and then I thought, ”Maybe I don’t have a place in this music industry, and if people don’t want to hear it, what shall I do?”

‘I was going through my separation, and really trying to get my head around the industry and where I sat in it. It was everything all at once, and I lost my confidence.

‘Even though I was shy as a kid, I was very confident about what I wanted to do, and I worked to try to make it happen.

‘The saddest part, when someone’s suffering like that, is you lose your natural personality and the confidence goes.’

Emeli admitted that as her struggles began to worsen she opened up to her sister Lucy, but kept it hidden from the rest of the world.

She admitted: ‘People who really knew me, they could have seen but, me? I was thinking, ”I’m just tired and stressed”.

‘At the time, I was like, ”I’m not depressed”, but looking back this year, and knowing how I am now as a person, I’ve realised.

‘I never had therapy, and that would have fast-tracked [things]. It’s scary because it’s like quicksand if you don’t recognise it.’
