Is it just me? Or are those birthday babies insufferable? asks CLAUDIA CONNELL

  • Claudia Connell says women who are babyish about birthdays make her cringe
  • She believes nobody older than ten should refer to herself as ‘the birthday girl’
  • Claudia also slammed the two-week countdown as she urged them to grow up

Wondering what presents you’ll get, hoping everyone turns up for your party, blowing out the candles and then (reluctantly) sharing your cake with friends.

Not to mention that giddy feeling of excitement the night before when there’s just one more sleep to go, then the big day. Birthdays are so exciting, aren’t they? Well yes, when you’re six years old.

By the time you reach midlife, unless it’s a landmark one, birthdays are mostly marked with a meal out (or at the moment, a takeaway) and a bottle of wine, then soon forgotten.

But there is a small group of kidult women who treat birthdays in the same way the average primary school pupil would. Adult women being babyish about birthdays make me cringe.

Nobody over the age of ten should ever refer to herself as ‘the birthday girl’ or do a two-week countdown — ‘eight sleeps to go. Eeeek!’ — before she clocks up another year.

And grown-up ‘birthday girls’ have ‘birthday weeks’, they don’t celebrate on a single day.

They keep their cards up on the mantelpiece for a month and put a black mark against the name of any friend who didn’t wish them a happy birthday on Facebook.

The hope was that in lockdown, at least the adult birthday babies would give their friends a rest. But if anything it’s even worse.

Zoom drinks are one thing but when you’re asked to wear fancy dress, that’s another matter.

And what’s with the endless demands to record funny videos and tributes to send to the ‘birthday girl’? Suddenly a card from M&S isn’t enough.

Come on, birthday babies. Grow up!
