Sia drops new video 1+1 from her controversial feature film debut Music featuring Kate Hudson

It’s been nominated for two high-profile Golden Globes, in spite of controversial depictions of autism and largely negative reviews from fans and critics.

But Sia’s new film Music is continuing to hype up its release via on-demand and streaming platforms this Friday by uploading full-length song and dance numbers.

The latest video is for a song called 1+1, which features Sia’s mainstay dancer (and title character in the movie) Maddie Ziegler along with costars Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr.

Made ya look: Sia’s new film Music is continuing to release content, with the latest video for a song called 1+1 dropped Friday featuring Maddie Ziegler, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr.

The clip opens on a street scene, with Hudson’s Zu announcing to her younger sister Music that ‘we’re about to have a pool party!’

The scene quickly changes to a surrealist red interior, with Kate decked out in a retro yellow swimsuit, swim cap and matching leggings.

As the camera pulls out, she is flanked by several supporting dancers, in what could be an Esther Williams sequence on acid.

The ambience is playful and zany, with some dancers holding water hoses, while others hold umbrellas to shield from the spray.

Still others bang on drums while one group plays with hula hoops.

In the center of the space, there is a large pit filled with plush pink cubes, with other swimsuit-clad dancers joining in on the synchronized choreography.

The camera follows Kate as she runs from one group of dancers to another, momentarily and gleefully partaking in their specific movements.

Hudson rejoins one of the drum players, played by Odom Jr, before Ziegler herself finally appears, wearing the same outfit as Kate but adorned with a giant brown braid hanging in front of one of her shoulders.

Maddie plays an autistic teen in the film.

As some critics have pointed out, the choice to use a non-autistic performer to play the central character of Music may be cause for concern.

Nonetheless, the 1+1 musical sequence on its own synthesizes many of Sia‘s best offerings: irresistible and irreverent pop hooks, coupled with inventive choreography and an undeniably uplifting spirit.

Placed within the film as a whole, however, the transitions between real life and Music’s colorful and melodic interior world have been branded as lurching and rough.

Specific scenes in the movie in which Ziegler’s character is restrained, furthermore, have met with significant derision from both critics and autism activists alike, prompting an apology from Sia herself along with a promise to edit those scenes out.

Still Music has been nominated for a Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical Golden Globe, along with a Best Lead Actress nod in that category for Hudson.
