Issa Rae to produce half-hour comedy series titled Rap S*** for HBO Max with hip-hop duo City Girls

Just a month after announcing her beloved show Insecure was coming to an end, Issa Rae already has her next big gig.

The 36-year-old actress and writer will be executive producing a new half-hour comedy titled Rap S*** for HBO Max according to a Thursday report from Deadline.

Rae along with her company Hoorae Productions will be teaming up with City Girls hip-hop duo Yung Miami and JT and writer Syreeta Singleton.

Joining her as executive producers will be Singleton, who will also serve as showrunner, as well as A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Montrel McKay.

Rae is not only producing the show but will also be writing the pilot.

The series will be following two friends who were estranged in high school only to reunite to form a rap group in Miami.

City Girls will also serve as co-executive producers along with Kevin ‘Coach K’ Lee and Pierre ‘P’ Thomas for Quality Control Films and Sara Rastogi for Hoorae.

Casting is currently underway with production scheduled to begin in the summer.

This comes just a month after it was announced that Rae’s highly-popular HBO show Insecure is coming to an end after a fifth and final season. 

The Emmy nominated comedy debuted in 2016 and shows a Black female experience as two best friends navigate life, love and careers after college.

Based on her web series, Awkward Black Girl, Issa created the series with Larry Wilmore and worked alongside showrunner Prentice Penny.

‘Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,’ she told Deadline.

‘We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience.’

It’s unclear when the final season will air, but production is rumored to begin later this month.

The Golden Globe nominated series debuted on HBO in October 2016 and concluded its fourth season with a finale which aired in June. 

The fifth season began filming on January 21 as Rae posted a photo from outside her trailer, and said, ‘First say of Season Bye-ve.’
