That’s one way to see granddad! Student midwife, 26, sees her 82-year-old grandfather for first time in a year when he turns up to get his Covid jab

  • Charlotte and David Taylor were reunited in the ExCeL Centre in Newham
  • The 26-year-old City University student was able to give her grandad the vaccine
  • ‘We’re all doing our bit to protect the vulnerable from contracting this virus’

A grandfather and granddaughter were reunited after a year apart at a vaccination hub in London as part of the Coronavirus injection roll out.

Final year midwifery student Charlotte Taylor was optimistic that she might see her grandad David at the ExCeL Centre in Newham, east London, where she has been drafted in to roll out the vaccine, but was unaware that he was next in line for his jab.

The 26-year-old from Sevenoaks, Kent, came out of her vaccinating pod in the Barts Health NHS Trust operated site to find Mr Taylor with his sleeve rolled up.

In a touching moment, she was also able to give her grandfather the vaccination which is bringing everyone a little closer to seeing one another again.

David Taylor, 82, said it was ‘very special’ to be given the vaccine by his granddaughter

‘I was able to be vaccinated by my granddaughter which was very special indeed,’ Mr Taylor said.

‘I had not seen her in the past year, so it was just nice to see her in person. Everyone there was so friendly and helpful.

‘Thank you to everyone working at vaccination centres – you are uplifting our spirits and bringing our lives back to some sort of normality’.

Ms Taylor, who studies at City University, added: ‘I really enjoy working at the NHS Covid-19 vaccination centre, Newham.

‘There’s a great atmosphere there. People are very happy and grateful to be receiving the vaccine.

‘It is also great to meet other vaccinators, from paramedics, to volunteers, to nurses and doctors, to medical students like me.

‘We’re all doing our bit to protect the most vulnerable from contracting this virus.’
