Bridgerton fans say it’s ‘ridiculous’ the Netflix series hasn’t received a Golden Globe nomination

Bridgerton fans have been left raging after the hit Netflix series failed to receive a single Golden Globe nomination.

The eight-part series was watched by a whopping 82million households worldwide in just a month, making it Netflix’s biggest show ever.

After it launched on Christmas Day, it quickly became the streaming giant’s most watched show in 83 countries including the UK, France and US.

So viewers were left both annoyed and confused as to why it didn’t sweep up when it came to nominations for the glitzy awards ceremony – with fans branding it everything from ‘ridiculous’ to a ‘scandal.’

‘#Bridgerton didn’t score a single nod from the Golden Globe. I can’t wait to see what Lady Whistledown has to say, because that’s a scandal,’ wrote one, while a second penned: ‘Not a single Golden Globe nomination for #Bridgerton… Bit harsh!’

Although recently released, Bridgerton quickly overtook the previous top spot holder, The Witcher, which received 76million streams in its first 28 days.

Netflix’s head of drama Jinny Howe announced the impressive streaming numbers during an interview with Variety, adding that Bridgerton has made it into the top 10 list in every country except Japan.

Bridgerton had been expected to hit 63million households in its initial four-week projections, meaning it smashed the target by an impressive 19m.

Netflix’s other hits including The Queen’s Gambit and Lupin also received very healthy numbers following their launches, boasting 62m and 70m respectively, reports Deadline.

So fans of the period drama couldn’t get their heads around the zero nominations, with one writing: ‘Bridgerton should have gotten some Golden Globe nominations.’

A second commented: ‘There is no logical reason why a show that has drummed up so much conversation like #Bridgerton didn’t get nominated for a single golden globe.

‘Did I love it ? No. But it’s spurred a whole a** musical and so much just general content.’

Family: The first series focussed on Daphne's search for love while also introducing viewers to her siblings (pictured L-R: Florence Hunt as Hyacinth, Luke Newton as Colin, Ruth Gemmell as their mother Violet, Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne, Claudia Jessie as Eloise, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony, Will Tilson as Gregory and Luke Thompson as Benedict)

However, others suggested a possible explanation for the supposed Golden Globes snub.

‘#Bridgerton wasn’t nominated for the #GoldenGlobes because the golden globes nominates shows/films released from Jan 1 – Dec 31,’ suggested one. ‘So even though Bridgerton was released on the 25th, it wasn’t enough time for Netflix to market it for awards, so not exactly a full on snub.’

Another commented: ‘I don’t think #Bridgerton as snubbed, they didn’t make the deadline to submit both film and television entries for Golden Globe award consideration November 30.’

It comes after the hit Regency drama was confirmed for a second series, this time following Anthony Bridgerton’s quest for love.

Bridgerton follows the self-titled family and how their lives are turned upside-down by the revelations of the illusive and anonymous Lady Whistledown in London.

Netflix confirmed the second series in a tongue-in-cheek statement penned as mysterious show lead Lady Whistledown.

They also shared the news on Twitter and YouTube with a montage of best clips from series one.

The statement read: ‘The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honour to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season. I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion.

‘This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season. I will have my pen to report on any and all of his romantic activities.

‘However, gentle reader, before you set the comments section alight with requests for more sordid details, know that I am disinclined to report on the particulars at this time. Patience, after all, is a virtue. Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown.’

It is believed that the second season will begin production in spring, Netflix have yet to confirm which characters will be officially returning for series 2 or further details.

The first series had a strong focus on the love story of Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page, and Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor.

The two characters start out as friends as a ploy to fool London’s elite and Lady Whistledown herself.

Yet after falling in love, Simon is forced to confront his inner demons after vowing to never marry or sire an heir to his dukedom out of spite to his late abusive father.

The first series did briefly touch on other stories, which included Anthony’s own turbulent romance with his opera singer lover Siena Rosso, played by Sabrina Bartlett. It is unknown whether Anthony and Siena will reunite in series 2.
