Earl of Sutherland is selling off hundreds of family treasures hidden at historic Dunrobin Castle

The Earl of Sutherland is selling off hundreds of family treasures that have been long hidden away at his family’s historic home at Dunrobin Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

The aristocrat is selling off a hoard of items that include eye-catching marble sculptures, a collection of rifles and historic photographs, paintings and portraits. 

There are also smaller items taken from within the castle’s kitchen and cellar, with guide prices ranging from £80 to £12,000 ahead of the auction in April. 

Bonhams will be holding The Dunrobin Attic Sale in Edinburgh on April, with 450 lots up for auction. 

The trove has been described as ‘a fascinating time capsule of domestic operations on a Downton Abbey scale’.

A collection of firearms will be going up for sale at Bonhams in Edinburgh come April. Among them is a pair of Scottish all-metal flintlock belt pistols made by Alexander Campbell of Doune in the 18th century. They have been valued at between £8,000 and £10,000

Estimates have been set at a level that will enable as many people to take part as possible and range from £8,000-12,000 for a Portrait of the Duke of Brunswick by the Dutch Golden Age portraitist Jan van Ravesteyn, and £8,000-10,000 for a pair of Scottish all-metal flintlock belt pistols made by Alexander Campbell of Doune, in the third quarter of the 18th century, to £80-120 for a collection of pewter sugar moulds. 

Everyday items used in years gone by are also up for sale.

They include footbaths, floral jugs and washbasins, chamber pots and crested dinner services, as well as meat domes, tiered oyster holders, copper vessels and glass carafes. 

Dunrobin Castle boasts 120,000 acres in the Scottish Highlands – it was inherited by the 25th Earl of Sutherland, Alistair Janson in 2019, who is just minutes older than his twin brother, Martin.

Last September it was revealed Martin Janson had been left just £250,000 in the £18million will that his mother, Elizabeth, the 24th Countess of Sutherland, wrote three days before she died in December 2019, aged 98. 

By contrast, his sister, Lady Annabel Bainton, was bequeathed £3.5 million.

‘Many of the items have been hidden away in Dunrobin Castle for generations and never been seen on the open market before. They provide a wonderful snapshot of what it was like to live both upstairs – and downstairs – in the Highlands’ premier ducal palace.’
