‘I’m aware of how wasteful I’ve been’ Katy Perry declares vow to ditch her ‘shopping addiction’ and only buy clothes when necessary in bid to help save the environment

Over the years, she’s become as renowned for her glamorous, eclectic and oftentimes outrageous wardrobe as she has her string of infectious pop hits.

But self-confessed ‘shopping addict’ Katy Perry has now announced plans to quell her passion for fashion in a bid to help save the environment.

Speaking on Instagram Live, the star, 36, said: ‘I used to be so addicted to shopping. I have become so aware of how wasteful I have been as a consumer with clothes.

‘In my personal life I have pledged to myself that I am not really going to buy. I want to only buy out of necessity.’

The star, who welcomed her daughter Daisy Dove with fiancé Orlando Bloom in August, also went on to highlight the impact of fast fashion.

She noted: ‘Clothes are in the top five of the most polluting things for our planet and I cannot be a part of that like I was. Especially knowing my daughter is going to grow up in that.’

Her confession comes days after she gushed about the experiences she’s had raising her five-month-old offspring as she took part in a Q&A on Thursday.

The singer told fans how her bundle of joy has ‘changed [her] life’ as she spoke to them while launching her Coca-Cola Open To Better can on Instagram Live.

She said of her offspring: ‘She changed my life and still continues to change my life,’ before sharing how she has learned to prioritise time with her child.

Katy continued: ‘I think that you realise that when you become a mother… you just have to focus on being a mom.

‘And it’s not because you don’t love other people, it’s not because of anything besides you just want to be a great mom.

‘So a lot of stuff falls away when you become a mom and it is the best job in the world. I highly recommend it when you’re ready.’

Despite her demanding schedule, the pop star and American Idol host has also learned to slow down and cherish each day as her daughter quickly grows.

She said: ‘I see my daughter change so much in the past five months and looking back at photos it’s like, “Whoa”. You see time in human form and it’s like… Now she’s got chunky cheeks.’

‘In a way, it’s really encouraged me to be even more present and to value every day,’ the California native added. ‘And all we have is this moment. That’s what’s promised is this moment and nothing else.’

Katy took part in the Q&A to promote her limited edition Coca-Cola can, which features her pledge for the year, ‘I Promise to Meditate’. Proceeds will go to her chosen charity, the anti-poverty organisation ONE.
