‘I used to be a perfectionist,’ she said, ‘but it became difficult to maintain that standard after having my children. So much was out of my control.’

And while she hopes to teach people about valuing what you have in your home and releasing clutter for more clarity, her path to finding joy in life wasn’t an easy feat.

‘I hope my openness on the subject will help others to ease up on impossible standards,’ Kondo said. ‘I gave up on perfectionism a while ago!’

While her 2020 book tour for Joy at Work was canceled due to the coronavirus, she leaned into what she knows best and practiced self care.

‘When life changes dramatically, as it is right now, I think it’s very important to keep a calm mind,’ she said, ‘and the process of tidying can give you a sense of calm.’
