Guy and Jules Sebastian defend their all-black ‘rock star’ mansion in Maroubra – after angry neighbours described the home as a ‘monolithic fortress’ and threatened to move

Guy and Jules Sebastian’s fortress-inspired Maroubra mansion has been a source of contention for many unimpressed neighbours.

But on Thursday, the couple defended their design choices, describing the $3.1million property as a ‘rockstar’ home.

‘We feel very lucky. Neither of us grew up in a house like this,’ former Australian Idol winner Guy told Who magazine on Thursday.

The home was designed by architect Joe Snell, and features a monochrome interior with concrete walls and steel accents throughout.

‘The first thing [Snell] said was, ‘I’m going to build you a rockstar home, which is classy and also liveable,’ and he achieved just that,’ Guy told the publication.

‘It’s really fun to start from scratch and make the design decisions,’ the pop singer explained, adding that the couple decided to design the interiors by themselves – without consulting a professional.

Guy purchased the $3.1million house in 2013, and then spent two-and-a-half years renovating it. He finally moved in with his family in June 2019.

Neighbours had long complained about the four-bedroom home, with many describing it as a ‘fortress’ because of its monolithic facade and others even threatening to move away from the area.

In December 2019, Guy defended the renovation, telling KIIS FM: ‘It’s a long build, but it’s a pretty special house. It’s not normal. It’s not a cookie-cutter house. It’s cool.’
