Speeding, uninsured, unlicenced student making Covid-breaching 150-mile journey has car seized

Britain’s dumbest driver? Speeding, uninsured, unlicenced student making Covid-breaching 150-mile journey ‘for a change of scenery’ has car (with bald tyres) seized after stopping in MIDDLE of the M62 when police pulled him over

  • Driver – who had only a provisional license – travelled from Preston to Sheffield
  • Picked up friend before setting off to Liverpool, travelling at 88mph on the M62
  • Slowed down when he noticed traffic car – but stayed in 3rd lane for 2 junctions
  • Driver ground to a halt in the middle of the M62 when officers intervened
  • Once the car pulled into the hard shoulder, police found it had two bald tyres
  • The man was reported for various offences, including breaching lockdown

A student who embarked on a lockdown-breaching 150-mile journey ‘for a change of scenery’ had his car seized after he stopped in the middle lane of the M62 when police pulled him over.

The driver – who had only a provisional license – travelled from Preston, Lancashire, to Sheffield to pick up a friend before the pair set off to Liverpool.

They were spotted going 88mph in the third lane of the M62.

He slowed down when he noticed a North West Motorway Police traffic car behind him – but stayed in the third lane for two junctions.

The driver eventually ground to a halt in the middle of the M62 – which the force said ‘certainly caused a panic moment’.

Once the car pulled into the hard shoulder, police found it had two bald tyres – when the rubber of a tyre is so worn down it has little tread left.

The man – who has not been named – was reported for excess speed, inconsiderate driving, having two bald tyres, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and for breaching Covid restrictions, the force said.

Under the rules of England’s third nation-wide lockdown, Britons are only allowed to travel outside of their local area for essential reasons.

These include travelling for work or for medical care.

Police also wrote the driver up for having no insurance, as any policy he had would have been invalidated by his escapades, and his car was seized.

The passenger was also reported for breaking lockdown rules.

In a statement shared to Twitter, alongside a picture of the man’s car, the force wrote: ‘Sometimes things just roll down hill for some people despite it being so easily avoidable.

‘A couple of students from Preston were spotted going towards Liverpool on the M62, sat in lane three at 88mph. Michael J Fox would be proud!

‘When the driver eventually noticed the traffic car behind him, he slowed right down, but stayed in lane three for two junctions.

‘Upon stopping him, he decided the best place to stop would in the running lane.

That certainly caused a panic moment.

‘When safely on the hard shoulder, we then find two bald tyres and he only has a provisional driving licence.

‘He was picking his friend up from Sheffield to go to Liverpool, apparently for a change of scenery!

‘Stay at home, and all of this would have been avoided.

‘Absolutely not acceptable. Therefore, the driver has been reported for: Excess speed, inconsiderate driving, two bald tyres, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, no insurance (as any policy he has will now be invalid), vehicle seized, breaching Covid restrictions.

‘The passenger will also be reported for his breach of restrictions.

‘Both of these individuals [were] taken off the motorway to find their way back home to Preston.’
