Zoom glitch makes Tory MP Scott Mann sounds like DALEK in Commons

Is there a Doctor in the House? Tory MP Scott Mann sounds like a DALEK in Commons debate thanks to Zoom call tech glitch

  • The House of Commons was a holding debate over the impact of ‘long Covid’
  • Tory MP Scott Mann appeared on video link but suffered technical problems
  • Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans intervened and joked he sounded like a ‘Dalek’

After working from home for months, you would have hoped MPs had like many of us mastered the tools of video conferencing.

But a technology glitch today stopped one MP’s speech because he sounded ‘like a Dalek’ from Doctor Who.

Tory MP Scott Mann was taking part in a House of Commons debate over the effects of long covid via video link.

But when the North Cornwall MP tried to speak his voice came out much deeper and slower than expected.

Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans quickly intervened and said: ‘Scott, you sound like a Dalek and I don’t mean that unkindly. There’s clearly a communications problem.’

MPs on both sides of the House could then be seen laughing at Mr Mann’s technology woes.

‘Let’s see if the audio is less scary,’ remarked Mr Evans as he called Mr Mann later in the debate.

Laughing, Mr Mann said: ‘Apologies from North Cornwall.’

There were no further technology issues for the MP.

‘Hybrid’ sittings of Parliament, where MPs can take part in proceedings either in the House or virtually, were first allowed on April 21 last year in response to the pandemic.
