Eagle-eyed shoppers spot Poundland 99p engagement rings are back

Would YOU say yes to a Poundland ring? Eagle-eyed shopper spots 99p engagement bands are BACK in store – but while some argue they’ll ‘turn your finger green’ others insist ‘it’s the thought that counts’

  • Shopper spotted Poundland 99p engagement rings are back in stores across UK
  • Photo of bargain jewellery was shared to Facebook group with mixed response
  • One person argued that ‘true love isn’t defined by how much a ring is worth’
  • Others claimed it’d be the type of ring that would ‘turn your fingers green’

An eagle-eyed shopper has spotted that the Poundland 99p engagement rings are back in store – just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The discount store offers a range of £1 ‘Bling Rings’ as well as £1 ‘Man Bands’ which are designed to be used as placeholders until a ‘proper ring’ comes along, and are available across the UK.

A shopper shared a photograph of the ring to Facebook group Money Saver Online – and it wasn’t long before some praised the bargain jewellery and argued it was the meaning behind it that counters, while others strongly disagreed.

‘Probably the type of rings that turn your finger green,’ wrote one, while a second argued: ‘Seriously…if I loved him and he loved me..then I’d wear it with pride. True love isn’t defined by how much a ring is worth.’

The post has since garnered over 5, 400 comments and 1, 100 likes – with many keen to express their very strong views on the matter.

‘Could’ve saved yourself a fortune,’ wrote one, tagging her other half, while a second penned: ‘Won’t matter if she breaks this. I’d buy 15 spares just in case!’

A third added: ‘I know it’s the thought that counts but still,’ while a fourth wrote: If it happens any time soon you’re dropped.’

However, others defended the cheap ring and instead said ‘if it’s given with love it does it matter.’

One wrote: ‘When my husband proposed to me he did it with a wild flower when we were on holiday because in that moment he felt it was perfect, and it was.

‘No ring, not even a thought of a ring. I wasn’t even bothered about having one at all but he insisted, there’s too much hype and pressure for the blokes to spend so much money and yet the love part seems completely irrelevant.’

A second agreed: ‘Sat here talking to my husband and thinking back to when he proposed. It was a surprise, it was magical and he chose the ring.

‘Nowadays men will buy this just because they know their Mrs wont be happy unless they’ve got their super expensive ring that they picked out. One day proposals will be planned, the woman will tell him when where and what ring.’

A third added: ‘Personally I wouldn’t care, it’s the thought that counts! Yes it may turn your finger green but love doesn’t come in material things!’

Last year, Poundland’s Valentine’s range was the biggest yet, with more than 80 products on sale including ‘adults only’ cards and fragrances.

The retailer announced they had sold almost £40,000 engagement rings ahead of Valentine’s Day on February 14 2020.

Early last year, the high street retailer released an ‘ask him ring’ to encourage women to propose this leap year.

The ‘man band’ was the budget retailer’s first foray into men’s engagement rings.

Announcing the release, Poundland cheekily suggested it wanted to encourage women to pop the question on February 29 ‘because he might never get around to doing it’.

The ring was available in four styles and finger sizes and came presented in a sumptuous navy velvet presentation box – meaning a loved one might not ever notice that’s its not designer.
