Tom Holland jokes he gave up Dry January after just 12 hours as he engages in hilarious Twitter exchange with his comedian father Dominic

Tom Holland has joked that he gave up Dry January after just 12 hours as he engaged in a hilarious Twitter exchange with his father Dominic on Monday.

The annual campaign sees people temporarily give up drinking for the whole of January to restore themselves after the overindulgence of the festive season.

Yet Spider-Man star Tom, 24, admitted that he gave up Dry January after 21 hours with his award-winning comedian father Dominic, 53, also failing the challenge.

Dominic was first to confess, tweeting: ‘Called time on dry January embarrassingly early but we have a full house – it’s cold and dark outside…’

To which Tom, who is set to reprise his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3, retweeted his dad and added: ‘I was doing really well…for about 12 hours’ alongside a crying emoji.

Tom was likely to have been making the most of some quality time with his family over the festive period because he’s got the third Spider-Man movie to keep him busy over the next few months.

The actor follows many Britons who abandoned the annual Dry January after less than a week of 2021 following the new national lockdown announced by Boris Johnson on Monday.

Following Mr Johnson’s drastic measures, put in place to combat a surge in infections and the threat of the NHS collapsing, people took to social media to joke about giving up on trying to be sober in the first month of 2021.

Celebrities also joined in the urge to give up on being sober, including former winner of I’m A Celebrity Vicky Pattison, and Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan.

It comes after Tom revealed in October, a month before production was due to begin, that he had received his new script for Spider-Man 3.

And he promised to stay tight-lipped this time after previously running into trouble for accidentally revealing spoilers.

He shared on his Instagram story: ‘Hey, so, I just got home and I’m in Atlanta. I’ve just been delivered a package. That package is an iPad, and on that iPad is a script.

‘And that script is Spider-Man 3, so I’m about to find out what I’m going to be doing for the next five months.

‘I’m not going to tell you anything about it, because I’ve learned my lesson.’

Rumours recently circulated that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who have both played the web-slinger in previous films, are to appear in the new movie.

But a spokesperson for the film simply said: ‘Those rumoured castings are not confirmed.’
