Kelly Clarkson delivers a heartfelt rendition of Madonna’s Borderline during her show’s Kellyoke segment

It was Madonna’s first US Top Ten hit on the Billboard charts in the spring of 1984.

And Kelly Clarkson did justice to Madge’s poppy track Borderline on her daytime talk show on Tuesday, covering the pop song with her unmistakable deep-throated vocals along with a surprising run segment at the very end for a final flourish.

The music star, 38, performed the ditty as part of the Kellyoke segment of NBC’s The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The first winner of American Idol, Kelly showcased her award-winning vocal power while performing the track, with the help of her band Y’all.

Clarkson belted out the hit in a darkened studio that featured purple and yellow lights beaming every which way, further evoking an unmistakably 80s feel.

She donned a mauve shirt-dress, belted at the waist with thick black leather and a silver buckle.

Borderline isn’t the first time Kelly has paid homage to the Queen of Pop – she performed Madonna’s Like A Prayer on her show last year.

And she even used her Madgesty’s excellent song Express Yourself, from the same 1989 album, as one of her audition tunes for American Idol back in 2002.

Kelly has been hosting her talkshow since September 2019.

Last month, it was reported that Clarkson’s program had tied with The Ellen DeGeneres Show in a ratings battle that saw the two shows taking first place.

The news comes as DeGeneres continues to deal with bad buzz ever since an expose was published last summer detailing the alleged toxic workplace behind the scenes at the show.

Kelly, meanwhile, has additional reasons to celebrate – not only is her show doing well in ratings, but it has also been renewed through 2023 at NBC.
